Diverse Learning

Inclusive Hindustani Classical Music Classes

At the Indian Classical Music School of Columbia (ICMSC), we also offer a distinct and inclusive music program designed specifically for children aged 5 to 12 years with learning differences, or those who benefit from extra patience, encouragement, and support. This specialized class is offered separately from our regular Hindustani music batches, ensuring a tailored environment that supports the unique needs of each diverse learner.

Rooted in Tradition

This program follows the same core curriculum as our regular Hindustani classical vocal classes, including raga-based training, swar and taal practice, and the fundamentals of voice culture and composition. However, it is delivered with adaptations in pace, emphasis, and methodology to suit each child’s individual learning style. Students also have the option to prepare for and appear in music exams, though this is not required unless the child is ready and interested. While our regular batches offer a nurturing and disciplined approach within a structured schedule aligned with curriculum and examination goals, this inclusive class allows for additional flexibility—making space for repetition, emotional scaffolding, and multisensory engagement to create a joyful and accessible learning experience.

An Adaptive, Child-Centered Approach

We recognize that every child learns differently. This class is not about perfection—it's about participation, exploration, and celebrating progress. With a low student-teacher ratio and a compassionate teaching style, we provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can:

  • Improve focus and self-regulation through swara practice and rhythmic clapping

  • Develop social and emotional confidence through group singing and improvisation

  • Experience music as a calming and expressive sensory outlet

  • Learn at their own pace with full emotional and musical support

Integrating Sound Healing for Holistic Growth

In addition to the classical music framework, this program thoughtfully integrates elements of sound healing. Using the therapeutic vibrations of specific swaras and the meditative qualities of alap and sur-lagav, children are gently introduced to the calming and grounding aspects of Nāda Yoga. These practices are designed to support emotional balance and inner well-being, without requiring any prior experience.

More Than a Class - A Celebration of Every Child

This program is a celebration of individuality, where every small step is recognized and encouraged. Our goal is to help children experience the joy of music while building lifelong skills in focus, confidence, and expression.
